Heart Health: What is it?

The heart is a vital organ that normally pumps blood continually throughout the body.  The pumping action of the heart keeps us alive.  Together, the heart and circulatory system make up the cardiovascular system.  The cardiovascular system distributes oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body and carries away waste products.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans.  However, the risk of heart disease can be reduced by promoting a heart healthy lifestyle.  Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions involving the heart and blood vessels.  The most common type is coronary artery disease but there are also other heart diseases.  A physician can determine if an individual is at risk for heart disease and diagnose heart related problems.

A healthful diet and lifestyle are two of the most important steps people can take to reduce the risk of heart disease.
